Warriors select Sosunov

With the 39th overall pick in the 2017 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, the Moose Jaw Warriors selected 19-year-old Russian left shot defenseman Oleg Sosunov.

Sosunov, 6’8”, 220lbs, is from Ryazan, Russian and spent last season with Loko Yaroslavl (MHL).  Appearing 39 games he recorded 79 penalty minutes.  Sosunov was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 6th round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

“Oleg is a big, solid, defensive defenseman who plays with an edge and skates very well considering his size.  As a draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, he is committed to his development in North America and his goal of playing in the NHL with the Lightning,” said Warriors General Manager Alan Millar.

“Couldn’t believe how good a skater and how good of a puck-handler he was for a guy who was 6-foot-8.  He’s a hockey player,” commented Tampa Bay Lightning Director of Amateur Scouting Al Murray in the June 25, 2016 edition of the Tampa Bay Times.
