The Portland Winterhawks got goals from six different players and handed the Moose Jaw Warriors 6-0 loss Saturday at Mosaic Place, marking the first time this season that the Warriors were held goalless.
Throughout the first period, the Warriors created opportunities but they weren’t able to finish on their chances.
On the other side of the red line, Portland used their speed to attack the Warriors inside their zone which led to turnovers and extra attack time.
3:47 into the game, Moose Jaw product Reece Newkirk put the Winterhawks on the board when he scored on a shot from the right side of the Warriors net.
Midway through the period the Winterhawks added to their lead on a goal from Jake Gricius, they went up 3-0 at 14:24 on a goal from Lane Gillis, and then Clay Hanus made it 4-0 with under two minutes left in the period.
18 seconds into the second period the Winterhawks added to their lead with a goal from Seth Jarvis set up by Jaydon Dureau and Reece Newkirk to make it 5-0.
Just over a minute into the third period the Winterhawks and WHL scoring leader Joachim Blichfeld scored his 36th of the season.
The Warriors 4-game home stand continues Wednesday when they take on the Calgary Hitmen at Mosaic Place, then next weekend they’ll battle Seattle and Brandon before heading out on a 7-game 14-day road trip through the B.C. and Central Division.
