Warriors Select Nine Players at 2017 WHL Bantam Draft

The Moose Jaw Warriors selected nine players today at the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft in Calgary, Alberta.  In total they selected five forwards, three defenseman, and one goaltender.  They drafted two players from Saskatchewan, four from Manitoba, two from Alberta, and one from British Columbia.

With their 1st pick of the draft, 15th overall in the 1st round, the Warriors selected left defenseman Daemon Hunt from Brandon, Manitoba.  Hunt, 6’0.5” 190lbs, played last season with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Winnipeg Bantam Division 1 league, in 36 games he had 22 goals, 38 assists, and 60 points.

In the 3rd round, 59th overall, they selected right winger Peyton McKenzie from Sherwood Park, Alberta.  McKenzie, 5’6.5” 167lbs, played last season with the Okanagan Hockey Academy in Edmonton and had 16 goals, 18 assists, and 34 points in 30 games.

Moose Jaw made two picks in the 5th round, their first was centre Levi Thiessen from Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Thiessen, 5’11.5” 150lbs, spent last season with the Winnipeg Hawks (WBD1) and had 27 goals, 34 assists, and 61 points in 30 games.

Later in the 5th with the 98th overall pick the Warriors selected defenseman Cory King from Souris, Manitoba.  King, 5’9.5” 150lbs, played last season with the Southwest Cougars (WBD1) and had 15 goals, 34 assists, and 49 points in 35 games.

The Warriors made a trade with Vancouver that involved moving Moose Jaw’s third 5th round pick to the Giants for a 6th round pick in 2017 and a 7th round pick in 2018.  With their newly acquired 6th round the Warriors drafted goalie Jackson Berry from Chestermere, Alberta.  Berry, 6’0” 154lbs, played last season with the Rocky Mountain Raiders and posted a record of 11-6-3 with a 2.07gaa and .921sv% in 20 games.

At the start of the 7th round the Warriors selected centre Calder Anderson 134th overall.  Anderson, 5’8” 146lbs, is from Brandon and played with the Wheat Kings in the WBD1, in 35 games he had 26 goals, 53 points, and 79 points.

In the 8th round, 169th overall, the Warriors selected Cade Hayes from Eatonia, Saskatchewan.  Hayes, 5’9” 161lbs, played last season with West Central (SBAAHL) and had 26 goals, 35 assists, and 61 points in 29 games.

In the 9th round, 191st overall, the Warriors drafted defenseman Carey Levesque from Carnduff, Saskatchewan.  Levesque, 5’10.5” 158lbs, played with Estevan (SBAAHL) last season and had eight goals, seven assists, and 15 points in 29 games.

Moose Jaw’s final pick of the draft was in the 10th round, 213th overall, and they were able to select centre Brendan Kerr from Victoria, BC.  Kerr, 6’0” 186lbs, played last season with Victoria RC (VIBHL) and had 50 goals, 58 assists, and 108 points in 41 games.

The 2017 draft class will be in Moose Jaw for the 2017 Warriors Prospect Camp June 1 to 4, details on the camp will be released at a later date.
