Moose Jaw Warriors Justin Almeida and Brayden Tracey captured league honours this afternoon at the annual WHL Awards Luncheon in Red Deer, Alberta.
Almeida became the third Warrior to be named the WHL’s Most Sportsmanlike. Almeida was second in team scoring and third in WHL scoring in the regular season with 111 points in 64 games, he led the WHL with 78 assists. Almeida was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 5th round at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, he signed an NHL Entry-Level contract with the Penguins in March.
Jason Bast was named the WHL and CHL Most Sportsmanlike player in 2009-2010, Blair Atcheynum captured the award in 1988-1989.
Tracey was named the WHL’s Rooke of the Year after leading all WHL and CHL rookies with 36 goals and 81 points in 66 games. Drafted 21st overall in the 1st round of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, Tracey recently returned from Sweden where he took part in the 2019 IIHF World Under-18 Championships and had four goals and seven points in seven games.
Tracey is the third Warrior to be named the WHL Rookie of the Year, Donovan Nunweiler won the award in 1996-1997 and Mark MacKay captured the award in 1984-195.
Almeida and Tracey will represent the WHL at the Canadian Hockey League Awards banquet later this month, the national awards winners will be announced during the Memorial Cup presented by KIA in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
