Moose Jaw Generals announce memorial game for Evan Thomas

(Marc Smith)  In an effort to heal together, a number of Evan Thomas’ former teammates and hockey players from across Saskatchewan will be suiting up next Thursday here in Moose Jaw.

Thomas was one of the 16 people that died last Friday when the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey had their bus hit by a semi-truck.

Moose Jaw’s Chantz Petruic and Ahmed Ally, who both played on the Moose Jaw Generals with Thomas, have came together to organize a benefit game in honour of Thomas with all the proceeds going to support the Broncos.

“Obviously I haven’t been through this kind of experience in my life, so it was hard to grasp and the healing process is a long one, but with stuff like this and being able to get all his buddies together, have a shoulder to lean onto, it helps a lot, so I just think this is going to help everyone and bring everyone together,” said Petruic.

Getting back to playing the game you love in a time of tragedy can be therapeutic. Petruic said he felt this was the best way to honour Thomas’ memory was by being together.

“The ice is a lot of players getaway from the outside world and if they’re having hard times off the ice, being on the ice usually helps that, so this will be huge,” he said.

The game will be held next Thursday, 7:30 p.m, at Mosaic Place and will feature current and former members of the Generals, as well as other players that have a connection with Thomas.

“We have Derrick Pouliot of the Vancouver Canucks coming out, we have a lot of Generals alumni, a few Moose Jaw guys, some guys that Evan played with in Saskatoon that we know and a few guys from around the SJHL and Western League, so it should be a good time,” said Petruic.

“It will be great for any hockey fan to watch all these guys come out, it will almost be like an all-star game out there and it should be a really great time for all of us, have a few laughs, it will be great.”

The Moose Jaw Warriors and Generals are coming together to put the game on. Admission is by donation, there will be a 50/50 running throughout the game, as well as jersey auctions and a chuck-a-puck. All the proceeds will be going to support the Humboldt Broncos.
