Fans were treated to a tight entertaining game Friday at Mosaic Place and they went home happy as the Moose Jaw Warriors improved their record to 2-2-1 with a 3-2 overtime win over the Brandon Wheat Kings.
In the first period, the Warriors were able to utilize their speed to ignite their fore-check which led to a consistent attack inside the Brandon zone.
The Warriors landed on the power play late in the period and were able to capitalize.
Captain Josh Brook came off the right point and controlled the puck on top of the Wheat Kings circle. He then moved the puck towards the goal line for Tristin Langan who then jammed the puck over the Justin Almeida on the left side of the Brandon crease where he scored his third goal of the season.
Two minutes later the Wheat Kings responded when Stelio Mattheos drove inside the Moose Jaw zone on the right wing and used the Warriors defenceman for a partial screen and then snapped a shot far-side to even the game at one.
There were moments throughout the second period where both teams had created quality opportunities but were either denied due to a great save by the goaltenders or the play was broken up due to a strong defensive play which kept the game tied at one moving to the third.
2:17 into the third period, Warriors Captain Josh Brook made a tape-to-tape stretch pass through the neutral zone to spring import Daniil Stepanov. The 17-year-old rookie skated hard to the high slot in the Brandon zone and then snapped in his first WHL goal to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.
Brandon responded at 7:58 when they set up Stelio Mattheos for a power-play goal that tied the game at two.
Throughout the remainder of regulation, the teams battled back and forth and exchanged scoring opportunities but were turned away by the goalies.
60 minutes wasn’t enough to produce a winner which meant for the second time this season the Warriors were headed into the overtime.
16 seconds in the extra period Josh Brook drove inside the Brandon zone and down the left wall and then cut to the net where he beat Jiri Patera for the game-winner.
Brook finished with a goal and three points, Justin Almeida had a goal and two points, Tristin Langan picked up two assists, and Brodan Salmond made 20 saves.
Moose Jaw outshot Brandon 11-5 in the third period and 30-22 overall, they were 1-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Coming up on Saturday the Warriors are back on home ice to take on the Swift Current Broncos for the first time this season. Catch all the action on Country 100 starting with the PreGame Show at 6:40pm.
